Environmental Statement

We are privileged to be living in Britain’s first designated National Park and aim to run Underleigh House in a way that has minimal effect upon our environment.

To this end we adopt the following practices:

  • An on-going programme to replace the bulbs in all lighting fixtures with low energy types
  • Use of small, low wattage kettles on hospitality trays
  • Thermostatic radiator valves are fitted on all radiators
  • Double glazing and insulation (of pipes/loft/tanks) reduce heat loss (and therefore the heat required) and the hot water temperature is set at 60°C
  • Dual flush toilets or toilet ‘hippos’ are fitted to reduce water consumption
  • Stickers in each bathroom encourage guests to think about how often they require fresh towels
  • ‘A’ rated electrical appliances replace older versions where possible
  • 2 high efficiency gas boilers have been installed
  • Support local economy by using locally sourced produce wherever possible
  • Promote Peak District goods and businesses with an array of information leaflets
  • Promote Peak District conservation and environmental information by displaying relevant leaflets
  • Support local delivery of bottled milk and recycling of milk bottles
  • Support local egg producer and return egg trays for re-use
  • By making our own jams/preserves, glass jars are re-used
  • Purchasing a growing number of recycled products e.g. stationary from recycled paper, refilled printer cartridges.
  • Bottles, cans, plastic and paper are recycled (using the village collection point and the local council’s doorstep collection)
  • Inkjet printer cartridges are recycled
  • Green waste is composted
  • Water butt used for tubs and greenhouse watering
  • Encourage guests to ‘walk from the door’ (and/or use local public transport)therefore reducing use of their car
  • The property is no-smoking throughout
  • Enhance biodiversity in the garden with a variety of bird feeders and nest box
  • Support National Trust conservation work within the Peak District (‘The Peak District Appeal’) and encourage guests to donate by having a collection box and donation forms available

We encourage our guests to help by:

  • Not leaving lights on when leaving the premises
  • Not leaving the TV on standby mode
  • Adjusting radiator valves to suit (and not having them on a high setting whilst leaving the windows open at the same time)
  • Supporting local businesses
  • Leaving newspapers, glass & plastic bottles to the side of the main rubbish bin so we can recycle them
  • Supporting our laundry policy and re-using towels
  • Supporting the National Trust Peak District Appeal

The Peak District Environmental Quality Mark (EQM) is an award for businesses that have good environmental practices and contribute to the conservation of the Peak District National Park. Underleigh House has the EQM award for Accommodation. This involves:
- Efficient use of energy & water resources
- Minimisation of waste by reducing, reusing & recycling
- Use of environmentally friendly products
- Purchasing from/supporting Peak District Farms who manage part of their land for conservation
- Telling our customers about our environmental efforts
